May 26, 2011 - A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the UNDP supported, Access to Information (A2I) Program (which seeks to introduce mobile banking services to rural populations) was signed in Bangladesh earlier this month. The National Project Director of the A2I Program, Nazrul Isalm Khan, signed the MoU and said:

the union information service centers (UISCs) have been set up in 4501 Union Parishads across the country to bring rural people under the information technology network for developing their lives and livelihood.

In line with the government's plan to build digital Bangladesh as charted out in the vision 2021, he said the government is adding different services to the UISCs to bring significant changes in the living standard of the rural people.

Only one in ten people has access to the banking services in the country, he said adding that introduction of mobile banking through UIScs would open a new chapter in the banking services to cover the rural people.

He described the signing of MoU as an epoch making step for providing banking facilities to the rural people to accelerate the pace of building digital Bangladesh. (Click for full article)

May 9, 2011 - In Bangladesh, the IFC is rolling out an interactive training program, the "Business Edge," to roughly 2,500 SMEs. The initiative, which is structured as a 2-day training workshop, focuses on training future trainers to ultimately improve recipient SMEs' management skills, productivity and efficiency.

“Small and medium enterprises help create jobs and promote economic growth in Bangladesh. By launching Business Edge in this market, IFC is reaffirming its commitment to supporting the country’s private sector growth,” said Aftab ul Islam, Chairman of Bangladesh’s SME Foundation, while speaking to participants at the inaugural session.

Ian Crosby, Manager for IFC Advisory Services in Bangladesh, said, “Business Edge will make available practical training tools to small enterprises to enhance their performance and income levels. Our partners’ efforts will be invaluable in reaching a larger number of small businesses.”

Local training-service providers, Windmill Education Services Limited and SEBA Limited, will partner IFC in implementing Business Edge.

IFC’s Business Edge program uses a comprehensive set of self-study books and training modules adapted to the local business context.  Key themes include marketing, human resources, production and operations, finance and accounting, and productivity skills.

Globally, IFC delivers Business Edge training services through a network of local franchised providers and certified trainers supported and monitored by IFC to ensure consistent performance standards. Bangladesh is replicating a similar model.

To date, the training has reached more than 150,000 participants in 20 developing countries in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America.  Key international companies have selected Business Edge to train their suppliers and distributors in sectors such as telecommunications, pharmaceutical, and banking to name a few.

May 5, 2011 -  This article, posted by the Daily Star, highlights the effects that political unrest in Bahrain is having on workers in Bangladesh: thousands of workers are unemployed.

There are around 1.5 lakh Bangladeshis in Bahrain. Most of them work in small companies. Only a several thousand work in big construction firms and a few hundred work as professionals.

"The big companies are continuing their business but many small firms stopped operation," Ibrahim told The Daily Star last week.

For the last few days, the Bangladesh mission in Manama has been receiving around 10 complaints every day that companies are not paying the workers, he said.

The Bangladesh embassy will soon talk to the employers about the non-payment. If that does not work, embassy officials will go to Bahrain's labour ministry to seek redress.

The undocumented workers, who mostly work as day labourers, are facing the worst situation, as nobody is hiring them amid the political turmoil.

Against this backdrop, many want to come home.

The Bangladesh ambassador in Bahrain talked with the Bahrain's prime minister who assured him of allowing the undocumented workers to return without any punishment, Ibrahim said. (Click for full article)
